A fire investigation can take anything from a few days to a many years, depending on the size of the fire, what is left after the fire, the loss of life or property, and if the case goes to trail. However, all fire investigations follow a similar pattern of recognizing the need to identify what factors contributed to the loss and identifying the problem, collecting facts and data, analyzing the data, developing hypotheses, testing hypotheses, and selecting final hypotheses that are the basis of conclusions.

Once Safety Consultants investigators are retained on a case, we start collecting facts, data, and information related to the loss. The initial process of the fire investigator can be as simple as reviewing fire department reports, fire alarm monitoring signals, fire protection systems maintenance, and test records. The volume of information can be overwhelming for significant loss cases if not handled within a well-established process.
